Mini Review: Public Enemies
Public Enemies is a fantastically acted, smartly written, and (save for a few select sequences) well directed film. Unfortunately not even my mega-crushes on both Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard, nor my adoration for the 1930s, can save a film that is too-long, too full of itself, and overall too (dare I say it?) boring to qualify for me being able to say I love it. That being said, it’s not a complete let-down. There are some fantastic scenes, particularly between Depp and Cotillard, and some great lines. (And also some not so great lines… like the last line of the film which I won’t spoil for you.) A brilliant film, but unfortunately a mediocre movie. Perhaps my hopes were simply too high.
Final Grade: C+, 77-80
