Katy Perry performing Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. I don’t know how I feel about this yet. But I do know that I don’t hate it.

20: Teenage Dream by Katy Perry.

Coming in at #20 on my top twenty, Katy Perry’s sophomore release just squeaked by on my list.

Teenage Dream is a solid pop album, with a good mix of sub-genres of pop. You’ve got your dance beats (California Gurls and Last Friday Night (TGIF), especially), but you’ve also got your generic radio-pop (Hummingbird Heartbeat and Teenage Dream ). The beats are all solid, the lyrics are all fun, and the melodies are memorable and catchy. Coming off of 2008’s One of the Boys, none of this should be a surprise for Katy Perry fans.

What is a bit surprising is actually how mature parts of this album are. It may seem like I’m being sarcastic in calling an album that has a song like Peacock on it “mature”, but the truth is that the juxtaposition of songs like that and more serious songs like Pearl are what make this album so well-rounded and complete-feeling. Perry doesn’t shy from tackling darker beats and melodies as a compliment to her well-known candy-coated tunes. While she’s well known for singing about daisy-dukes and melting popsicles, it would be a crime to ignore the maturity of a track like Circle the Drain, which finds Perry playing the role of a lover sick and tired of dealing with her partner’s drug addiction.

A really solid improvement on her debut, Perry has matured in almost every way since 2008, and it shows. But unlike many pop stars who release extraordinarily dark and complex follow-ups to their debut because they feel like they need to prove themselves, Perry manages to show off her range while maintaining the fun and poppy carelessness that made her so appealing two years ago. As someone who didn’t care for One of the Boys much at all, I can vouch for Teenage Dream. Even if you don’t think you like Perry, it’s worth checking out.

Highlights: Firework; Circle the Drain; E.T.; Hummingbird Heartbeat

Last Friday Night (TGIF) by Katy Perry.

I could really use a Friday night right about now.

New rule: Katy Perry and Lady GaGa must admit that what they’re really fighting about is who gets to be Cher.
