God, does anyone else remember this thing? This was so weird. Like, it would be one thing if Apple did this kind of thing with a bunch of artists… but it was just U2. And don’t get me wrong—U2’s cool and all—but they’re hardly so amazing that they deserve their own iPod, right?

This was a weird part of history that’s been mostly forgotten—and that’s for the best.

Original of the Species

U2

I’ve always liked U2. I think they’ve lost a lot of popularity in the last decade, a lot of which is probably because of Bono’s obsession with being a good samaritan. His attitude at times comes across as pushy and overbearing, and makes the band seem cockier and more full of themselves than they probably are. That being said, I think a lot of people forget what it was that made U2 so popular in the first place: they’re really fucking good at making music.

Even those who like U2 dismiss their last two or three albums as “mediocre” or “run of the mill”, but I disagree. I think the band has been doing great these last few years. Elevation was fantastic, and their latest album earned a well-deserved 5-star rating from Rolling Stone magazine. But I still have a soft spot for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, and especially this track, Original of the Species. The lyrics are beautiful, the melody is perfect, and Bono’s voice is as good as it ever gets.

I think there’s very little to dislike about this song.

This was super hard, but I’ve come up with my list of my top 10 albums of 2009. These were the albums, in order of most to least, that brought me the greatest pleasure last year.
  1. Far by Regina Spektor
  2. The Fame Monster by Lady GaGa
  3. Horehound by The Dead Weather
  4. Where The Wild Things Are by Karen O and the Kids
  5. Hold Time by M.Ward
  6. Davy by Coconut Records
  7. My Old, Familiar Friend by Brendan Benson
  8. Grand by Matt & Kim
  9. The Boy Who Knew Too Much by MIKA
  10. No Line on the Horizon by U2
Now, those were the top 10. But so amazing, outstanding albums came out last year that it was difficult to limit it just to 10…. which is why I now present the five albums that almost made it to my top 10. All of these are excellent, and truly deserve to be mentioned in any 2009 music-list.

  1. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix
  2. Manners by Passion Pit
  3. For Your Entertainment by Adam Lambert
  4. La Roux by La Roux
  5. (500) Days of Summer by Various Artists
Those were my favorites, what were your favorite albums of 2009???
